Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts, announced on November 3, 2026 that it will cut published tuition by $30,000 starting in fall 2027. Tuition for the 2027-28 school year was set to reach $69,000 and will now be $39,000.

That 43% cut moves the posted price much closer to the net price families actually pay.

Wheaton’s new tuition pricing page shows the total billed cost falling from $88,400 to $58,400 because housing, meals and fees don’t change. Returning students are covered too. Wheaton will trim each returning student’s merit scholarship so their net cost stays where it would have been.

Need-based financial aid isn’t affected, and the college says “no student—prospective or returning—will pay more because of our new pricing.”

Why It Matters

College pricing is a frustrating black box for families. Paraphrasing a quote from Ron Lieber: “College is one of the only goods and services where some families pay nothing, some families pay the full sticker price, but most families pay something in the middle.“

The trouble is, the sticker price is the first number that most families see, and it’s what most families make their decision on. Wheaton says this scared off some prospective students.

The college points to research showing nearly seven in ten students can’t calculate what college will cost them. Only a third of families describe the financial aid process as straightforward. Under the old model, families had to run a net price calculator to learn that first-year students in fall 2025 paid an average total bill of $24,624 after financial aid.

Wheaton’s old pricing is the industry norm. Private nonprofit colleges discounted tuition by an average of 57.1% for first-time, full-time undergraduates in 2025-26, according to estimates. And families have to file the FAFSA and sometimes the CSS Profile just to see their real number.

What Wheaton Will Charge In 2027-28

The full $30,000 cut comes out of tuition, while housing, the meal plan and fees stay at their planned 2027-28 rates. These figures come before any scholarships or grants, so $58,400 is the most a full-pay family would be billed for one year.

Families comparing offers should still calculate an adjusted net price for each school on their list.

Why We Like Wheaton’s Approach

We’ve argued for years that college pricing works like a used car lot. The school posts a big sticker price, then discounts nearly every buyer through a black box of scholarships and grants (substitute the dealer’s finance manager for the financial aid office).

Our analysis of what actually lowers the cost of college for families found sticker prices kept rising even as real net tuition fell. A lower, honest price up front lets parents compare schools accurately before anyone applies.

Wheaton is the type of school where this matters most. It isn’t an Ivy or Ivy Plus school with a giant endowment and a free-tuition promise. U.S. News ranks Wheaton No. 81 among national liberal arts colleges in its 2027 edition, and the school says 92% of graduates are employed or in graduate school within six months.

Families who skipped it over an $85,600 price may have missed a strong option, which is why we push parents to compare net prices before building a college list.

What Families Should Still Check

Wheaton’s changes reduce the spread between posted and actual price, but it doesn’t erase it. A first-year student paying the fall 2025 average of $24,624 against a $58,400 bill would still be getting about $33,800 in grants. Those numbers come from different school years, so treat the math as a rough estimate.

Borrowing decisions should start from the net price, especially with parents borrowing more than ever for college.

A net price calculator only estimates one year, so we tell families to price the full cost over four or five years with 5% to 8% annual increases. With 5% increases, Wheaton’s $58,400 billed cost adds up to about $251,700 over four years before other financial aid. An 8% annual increase pushes that four-year total to about $263,200.

Ask whether merit scholarships stay renewable for all four years under the new structure, since Wheaton’s current tuition page says they do.

The same math works on a net price. A family paying $24,624 a year with 5% increases would spend about $106,100 over four years at Wheaton. The college also tells families to budget about $2,000 a year for indirect costs on its tuition and fee page. Add both numbers to your college cost comparison before deciding what a fair price looks like.

How This Connects

Wheaton joins other private colleges that are lowering the posted tuition price to match what students actually pay. Whitworth University cut its listed tuition from $54,000 to $26,900 for 2026-27, and Bridgewater College dropped from $40,300 to $15,000 in fall 2024. Whitworth told current students they would pay about the same as before, the same promise Wheaton is making now.

Those changes stand out against the price hikes we tracked in our review of why colleges say they raise tuition.

What’s Next

This year’s high school seniors will be the first class to apply under the new price. President Michaele Whelan said in a statement she hopes the clearer pricing will “encourage more students to take a closer look at Wheaton.”

The bigger test is enrollment, since an Ithaka S+R researcher told Inside Higher Ed in 2023 there isn’t much evidence that price drops raise enrollment. Families with a senior this year should run a net price calculator for Wheaton and every school on their list before application deadlines.
