Transfer Bonus, Fees & Is It Worth It?
Silo Markets is an investment rewards program that will pay you points for holding your portfolio there. Your assets are held at Interactive Brokers, a publicly traded brokerage firm with 5+ million customers and nearly a trillion dollars in customer equity. Interactive Brokers is a member of SIPC.
Silo Markets is relatively new, having been founded in late 2023, but their model involves giving you rewards on your portfolio’s assets. In return, you pay an annual fee.
You’re essentially earning rewards for putting your assets with Silo (really, with Interactive Brokers).
Quick take: Silo pays 0.5 points per dollar (worth 0.5% in cash) on your balance each year, minus a $95 to $960 annual fee. It works best for buy-and-hold investors with at least $80,000 to move, and Platinum only beats Gold above about $344,000. The Platinum transfer bonus ends September 30, 2026.
Here’s how Silo Markets could put more money in your pocket:
New Silo Platinum members can earn bonus points on money they move to Silo. Transfers (ACH, wire, check, ACATS, or an internal Interactive Brokers transfer) must be initiated by September 30, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. PT.
(After the deadline, the maximum you can get is only 250,000 points)
The bonus is tiered:
That’s a maximum of 300,000 points ($3,000) under the Platinum bonus terms. Blue Rewards only gets you a $5,000 point bonus while Gold Rewards are listed with a 100,000 point welcome bonus.
| Amount transferred | Bonus points | Cash value |
|---|---|---|
| $100,000 | 50,000 | $500 |
| $250,000 | 112,500 | $1,125 |
| $500,000 | 175,000 | $1,750 |
| $1,000,000+ | 300,000 | $3,000 |
Bonus points post on the 10th of the month after the deposit window closes, or once all assets have settled, whichever is later. It’s one welcome bonus per Social Security number across all Silo accounts.
Platinum costs $960 a year and requires at least $25,000 in the account, so the bonus only makes sense if you’re moving a significant balance.
The welcome bonus is a one-time offer but every year you can earn more Silo Points based on your net liquidation value (NLV). NLV is calculated as the value of the brokerage account if everything is liquidated. This is calculated by Interactive Brokers at the market close on the last business day of each month.
Here’s how much you’d earn each year holding your assets at Silo Markets:
| Plan | Annual fee | Balance earning points | Annual points | Max cash value per year | Net after fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blue | $95 | Up to $50K | Up to 25,000 | $250 | $155 |
| Gold | $240 | Up to $200K | Up to 100,000 | $1,000 | $760 |
| Platinum | $960 | Up to $1M | Up to 500,000 | $5,000 | $4,040 |
The amount in assets you need to breakeven at each tier, where points exceed the annual fee, is:
Break-even only tells you when points cover the fee. Because each plan caps the balance that earns points, the best plan depends on how much you have.
Here’s what each plan nets you per year (points value minus the annual fee) at different balances:
| Balance | Blue | Gold | Platinum | Best plan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $50,000 | $155 | $10 | -$710 | Blue |
| $100,000 | $155 | $260 | -$460 | Gold |
| $200,000 | $155 | $760 | $40 | Gold |
| $500,000 | $155 | $760 | $1,540 | Platinum |
| $1,000,000 | $155 | $760 | $4,040 | Platinum |
Gold beats Blue above about $79,000, and Platinum beats Gold above about $344,000. These are ongoing numbers before any welcome bonus, and they assume your balance holds steady.
Each point is worth a penny when you redeem it for cash. 100 points = $1.
There is a monthly redemption limit: 100,000 points per calendar month on Platinum and 50,000 on Gold.
There is also a travel portal and they have announced transfer partners are coming soon. A penny a point is still the floor with the potential for a higher valuation.
Unlike most big brokers, Silo charges commissions. Its pricing page lists:
For buy-and-hold investors this is minor. Buying 100 shares of an ETF costs $0.35. If you trade often, count commissions against the points you earn.
The biggest risk is that Silo Markets changes the rewards earning rate. 0.5 Silo Points per dollar is not guaranteed. The terms say they give 30 days notice on any changes and will honor the rate until the end of the current service period.
You could move over $1,000,000 expecting to get $5,000 a year in points only for it to change.
Your monthly reward is based on a month-end snapshot. It doesn’t use an average balance across the month, so if there is a big drop, you get a lower reward due to bad luck.
The subscriptions are per account. So if you have $100k in an individual brokerage account and $100k in a Roth IRA, that’s two $100k accounts with two annual fees. It’s not one account of $200k with a single annual fee.
Redemptions are capped each month (100,000 points on Platinum, 50,000 on Gold), and points expire after 12 months of inactivity if you cancel all subscriptions.
Silo can also withhold, reverse, or adjust points in cases of error, ineligibility, or manipulation of balances near month-end.
On a $1 million transfer, the Platinum bonus is worth $3,000, or 0.3%. You also collect up to $5,000 in points each year you stay, so year one could net about $7,040 ($3,000 bonus + $5,000 in points – $960 fee).
In terms of welcome bonuses, it’s on par with some of the popular brokerages that offer transfer bonuses. You do lose a little towards the annual fee but because you can continue to earn points year after year, it’s a relatively strong offer if you’re already looking to move brokerages.
If you’re moving a retirement account, also compare the current IRA rollover bonuses.
Your account is held at Interactive Brokers, a SIPC member. SIPC protects up to $500,000 per customer (including $250,000 in cash) if the brokerage fails. It doesn’t protect against investment losses.
One cent each when redeemed for cash, so 100 points = $1.
On the 10th of the month after the deposit window closes, or once all transferred assets settle, whichever is later.
Not while you have an active subscription. If you cancel all subscriptions, points expire after 12 months of inactivity.
Platinum requires at least $25,000. On Gold, you need at least $5,000 at month-end to earn points that month.
