The Pentagon has created a new tier of military-focused colleges. In a September 30 memorandum, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth designated five schools as distinguished military colleges. For families comparing military routes to paying for college, the list of campuses with a full cadet corps just nearly doubled.

The new schools are Hillsdale College, Liberty University, Louisiana State University, Mississippi State University and Tuskegee University. Each will build a self-governed cadet corps modeled on those at the six senior military colleges, which Congress names in federal law.

Hegseth announced the move at his State of the Force address at Marine Corps Base Quantico. It follows other administration pushes on campuses, including an Education Department request that every college publish a reform statement.

What Is A Distinguished Military College?

A distinguished military college is a civilian university that runs a uniformed, self-governed corps of cadets with military training, under a designation from the Secretary of Defense. It ranks one step below a senior military college, which only Congress can designate. Both differ from the federal service academies like West Point, which charge no tuition in exchange for required service after graduation.

The label itself isn’t new. Inside Higher Ed reports that the military once used the designation and later abandoned it. A former LSU commandant of cadets, Joseph Musacchia, told The Reveille that LSU held the title in the 1920s. Its cadet corps went semi-dormant after participation became voluntary in 1969, though LSU kept the ROTC programs that cover tuition for many cadets.

What Schools Must Do To Earn The Designation

Schools must meet four requirements:

• Request the status from the defense secretary.
• Establish a four-year military or national security program.
• Host a distinct cadet corps led by an independent commandant who reports to the university president.
• Require cadets to wear uniforms during academic hours.

The Pentagon did not say how it chose the five schools. Families researching which schools fit their budget should expect the list to grow.

What The Designation Means For Students And Families

The main student benefit is “Honor School” status. LSU says that status gives cadets priority in officer commissioning. That means more consideration when cadets compete for active-duty slots, an edge for students who plan to use military service to manage student debt.

Coverage of the announcement has not mentioned new funding, scholarships or tuition cuts tied to the designation. Cadets still pay through ROTC scholarships, family savings and the usual order of operations for covering a college bill.

Uniforms carry a cost too, with Musacchia telling The Reveille that each LSU uniform can cost around $1,000.

The designation also works as a stepping stone toward senior military college status, which would require approval from Congress. That upgrade carries real protections under federal law. The Army must assign qualified graduates to active duty if they request it, and ROTC units at these schools can’t be cut unless the college asks. Active-duty service also counts as qualifying employment for Public Service Loan Forgiveness if a graduate borrows later.

The Full List Of Senior And Distinguished Military Colleges

Eleven schools now have a federally recognized corps of cadets. The six senior military colleges hold their status by statute, while the five distinguished military colleges hold theirs by Pentagon designation. Students weighing these schools against tuition-free service academies can use the table below.

Who The Five New Schools Are

LSU was founded in 1860 as the Louisiana State Seminary of Learning & Military Academy. The school plans to open its cadet corps to non-ROTC students next year and create a “National Security Battalion.”

Mississippi State President Mark Keenum pointed to the school’s Army and Air Force ROTC programs and its roots as a land-grant military school. In-state families can compare both against other options using The College Investor’s Louisiana college costs and financial aid breakdown.

Tuskegee is the only historically Black university on the list and the home of the Tuskegee Airmen. The school has 197 students in ROTC across five service branches, according to The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education. Students there can stack ROTC with HBCU-focused awards like the UNCF General Scholarship.

Liberty offers Army and Air Force ROTC plus new Navy and Marine Corps programs, and it reports more than 40,000 military-affiliated students. Liberty’s own announcement describes the school as being considered for the program. Hillsdale President Larry Arnn told Inside Higher Ed the college was “honored at this chance to be of service and grateful to the Department of War for the opportunity.” Both private schools set their own prices, so families should check each school’s net price before applying.

The rollout drew political attention. In the same speech, Hegseth called Ivy League and most liberal arts colleges “anti-American, DEI-worshipping woke factories.” Hegseth has also canceled Pentagon fellowships at Harvard and Yale. The administration is pressuring colleges on other fronts too, including new Education Department limits on loans for low-earning programs.

What Families Should Do Now

1. Price the school first. The designation doesn’t lower tuition, so run each school through a net price comparison.
2. Apply for ROTC scholarships early. ROTC remains the main way cadets cut costs, and The College Investor’s breakdown of military education benefits covers each branch.
3. Ask about cadet costs. Uniforms, housing and training fees can add up, so build them into your college payment plan.
4. Compare the academies. West Point and the Naval Academy remain among the few tuition-free colleges, though admission is far more selective.
